The Top 5 Rapture Arias
Last week we all got prepared for the rapture, so I asked our Twitter followers which aria they would listen to as their last aria before the rapture. We had some fantastic submissions but here are the "Top 5 Rapture Arias" chosen from your suggestions.
Do you agree? What would your rapture aria/s be?
5. "Sacred Rapture" from Solomon by Handel
"@AllegraGiagu: in Handel's 'Solomon', the priest Zadok sings the aria "Sacred #rapture" .... geekily enjoying the #rapturearia search!"
4. The finale from Faust by Gounod
"@talopine: I think something from the end of Faust or Don Giovanni might be most appropriate for me :) #rapturearia "
3. "The Trumpet Shall Sound" from Messiah by Handel
Handel returns again with this suggestion from @findo.The recording of this being sung by Teddy Tahu-Rhodes isn't able to be embedded, but you can view it here.
Alternatively, here is another rather creepy modern take:
2. Ritt der Walküren or Ride of the Valkyries from Die Walküre by Wagner
This classic suggestion from @DameDivaDan. Gives me shivers every time.
1. The Immolation Scene from Götterdämmerung by Wagner
Somewhat unsurprisingly, Wagner has taken out the top 2, with the Immolation Scene and Götterdämmerung easily getting the most mentions on rapture day, with @DharmaBray the first to point it out.
"@DharmaBray: oh that's easy, but a tad long, Brunnhilde's Immolation Scene :-P ... pity no one's doing Götterdämmerung tomorrow [on rapture day]...."

Excellent post. Love all the vid choices, too.
ReplyDeleteLove it! Although, as I tweeted in abbreviation, I think technically, they would both count as "post rapture". That is why I will give it a miss and wait till the fat lady sings.
ReplyDeleteThanks Gale!
ReplyDeleteThe Wagnerian, in that case the date of posting the videos was apt, no? Post-rapture arias in the end anyway!
