Voices will soar and hearts will break as Gale Edwards’s raw and tender new production of La bohème takes the stage at the Sydney Opera House.
Meet the bohemians. Young, beautiful and in love.
This carefree band of friends is fighting for survival in the gaudy twilight of 1920s Berlin.
When cabaret star Musetta sings she is the most beautiful woman in the world. When the idealistic writer Rodolfo meets the innocent seamstress Mimì the passion blazes in their hearts. But love won’t pay the rent.

Opera Australia invites you to their brand new glittering production of Puccini's 'forever young' opera "La Boheme" (The Bohemians). Hearts will soar and tears will fly as you are swept away in a night of seemingly endless passion and endless heartache. Gale Edward's new twist on an all time favorite breathes a new life into one of the most beautiful opera's ever written. Real, gritty and heart felt, set in 1930’s Berlin (another brief Bohemia before the onslaught of Nazi Germany); Rodolfo (a poor and struggling poet) falls in love at first sight with the delicate and fragile seamstress Mimi. For a few moments the world is bright as two star struck people’s love for each other glows like a heated flame that inevitably will burn far too quickly. Your heart will sing when you hear Mimi’s aria “Si, Mi chiamano Mimi” (Yes, they call me Mimi) sung by the beautiful American soprano Takesha Meshe Kizart. Watch as Australia’s own Taryn Fiebig lights a flame of jealousy as the songstress Musetta in Bohemian painter Marcello’s heart, as she teases and tempts him with the waltz aria “Quando me’n vo” (When I go along). “La Boheme” is a spectacle for the eyes with beautiful conceived costumes and sets and a feast for the ears with a soaring and emotional score sung by a beautifully talented and youthful cast. Opera Australia’s new production of this classic opera creates the shining light of love and happiness that is the story of “La Boheme”, which glimmers in the tiny corner of a cold world filled with darkness and sorrow. So crack open the champagne and celebrate life’s fleeting pleasure’s with a night at the opera with OA’s “La Boheme”. Ian Warwick. email: i.warwick91@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteMuch better than the last production where a cast member, did a pretend unzipping/urinating in a toilet bowl on stage.First time in the world of opera, truly uncalled for and it had to be in Australia.Mr. Puccini must have turned in his grave. Our singers and musicians are as good as any in the world. wish I could say the same about our directors
ReplyDeleteFor my mother and I, last night's attendance at La Boheme was the perfect end to a 2-night stay in enchanting Sydney. From spectacular sets to spine tingling performances - as first timers to the Opera we're now 'hooked' and thinking about the next wonderful experience. Thank-you Opera Australia for showcasing such amazing talent.
ReplyDeleteI was at the performance last night (Tuesday September 6th) and had a wonderful time. It was the fourth time I'd attended this production in Sydney and thought it was, by far, the best I'd seen. Bravo to the Maestro! He is a wonderfully talented young man and manages to extract every nuance from Puccini's score. I've followed his career over a decade and feel that he has reached a new high. What an asset Opera Australia has in their audience-favourite conductor! Thanks again for a great performance.
ReplyDeleteI agree wholeheartedly with this last comment. Brian Castles-Onion is brilliant! We need to see more of him on the Sydney Opera House podium. I also really enjoyed the talented cast. Andrew Jones is a star in the making.....
ReplyDeleteI loved the show. It was a great night. Thanks Opera Australia!
ReplyDeleteI have been waiting for so long to see this spectacular production and now I finally have the chance. After the reviews and after reading the comments I cant wait to be one more time delighted by the class and uniqueness of the productions from the Opera House.
